2022 Baking Challenge Part 4: Quick and Easy Tortillas

One of the coolest lessons I’ve learned through my baking challenges has been that you can easily make items at home that you have bought in stores for most of your life. From hamburger buns and English muffins to pop tarts and chocolate eclairs, I have enjoyed the process as well as the end result of the food I have made from scratch. It’s truly a delight to know I made something that I thought I had to buy for it to be tasty. My most recent discovery is a food item I have possibly bought most in my life – TORTILLAS! I found a super quick, 4 ingredient recipe that you can check out at this link.

These tortillas only required 4 ingredients – flour, water, salt and olive oil!

The first step was to mix together the two dry ingredients which were the two cups of flour with half a teaspoon of salt. Then, I stirred in 3/4 of a cup of water with 3 tablespoons of olive oil until the dough was starting to come together.

I dumped the dough onto a floured surface and kneaded everything together about 12 or so times until it became a smooth, consistent texture. The recipe says to add a little more flour or water if the dough needs it, but I was able to avoid that step. I placed the dough back into the bowl to rest for about 10 minutes.

After the resting period, I cut the dough into about 8 even pieces. I used my food scale to make sure each piece was about the same size and weight. The entire ball weighed 518 grams so each piece was about 65 grams.

Once weighed, I placed each piece of dough onto the lightly floured surface and rolled it out to be about 7 or 8 inches in diameter.

I heated up my Our Place pan and placed the circular dough into the lightly greased surface. Each side heated up and cooked in the pan for about a minute or so. It was fun to watch the bubbles appear across the surface as the dough started to brown.

My delicious very full taco!

I made these tortillas over the weekend of Pete’s birthday. We ate the tortillas fresh and warm with fajita seasoned ground turkey, grilled peppers and onions, cheese, rice, beans, lettuce, nonfat greek plain yogurt, and salsa.

Pete gave them an 8.1 and I gave them a 7 out of 10. They were good but the shapes of the tortillas were pretty asymmetrical and I I’d like to try another recipe that has a little more flavor. With such a simple recipe, I got what I asked for with pretty plain tortillas although I couldn’t beat how easy they were to make!

Let me know if you try these out!! It was fun to make something a little more unique for our typical taco night. If you have any recipes you’d like me to try in a future baking challenge, be sure to let me know in the comments! I’m always up for suggestions.

Sending you all lots of love,

Alanna
