October: A Focus on Creativity

images-13

It has been nearly 4 months since I last posted a new blog.  In October, I am hoping to make up for that lost time.   My problem is setting aside time each week to solely put my efforts to writing, editing, or filming a project.  I quickly will throw away my personal plans if a family member or friend needs help or wants to do something with me.  I have a bad case of FOMO (fear of missing out) and usually see an invite to do something as an opportunity to make my day/week/life better.  But, I also know that making sure I have time to keep my creative juices flowing is very important. I have made a few goals for this month that will help me make this blog and other items on my TO DO list a bigger priority. First, I hope to post something new each week to this site.  If possible, I would like to make it a habit.  One of my friends releases two new videos a week along with a blog post, so I think if I focus I can put out one new item on my own.  Also, I have joined the #creativesprint for October.  Creative Sprint is a project to get more people to be creative by providing an inspiring daily prompt. So far, the ideas have been to create something tiny, do something with my name, use a nursery rhyme, show the weather in your area from that day, and use camouflage to make something.  Seeing the new prompt each morning has really been a fun way to keep mind working in way that’s different than how it does when my focus is spread across so many other things.

To start my month of creativity, I thought I would post a short story that I wrote when I was a freshman at William and Mary taking an Intro to Creative Writing class.  The prompt was given to me by another class mate to write a story that was about “no characters, nothing, and nowhere.”  I remember thinking it was an impossible task and it took me awhile to get started.  But, it ended up being a really crazy story that’s kind of trippy, but I also really love.  I wanted to post it here for anyone interested to read, but also to have a place I can find it later. So, here it is:

About Nothing, Nowhere, and No Character
October 15, 2008

On a day that has not and never will occur, No Characters is on her way to Nowhere. She is a girl who has not lived and will never be born on Earth. Her experiences occur in a realm that normal human consciousness cannot penetrate. Her only goal is to reach a point that makes her feel satisfied because nowhere is somewhere that only the explorer can determine. The guideline for her life is that she has to come in contact with nothing, which in reality is something. She is “Nunca” because she never exists.

When she appeared, she immediately started moving. In any direction she went, nothing she saw was the same. To her right, she saw the color yellow. To the left, she could hear the sounds of creatures, but could not see them. In front of her, she could feel a soft breeze and smell the ocean, but could not touch anything. Behind her were memories and history, but she could not go back there since she does not have the capacity to remember. Everything she did was instantaneous and could not be redone. Her only motivation was to keep her self going and find a way to get nowhere.

It sounds ridiculous to have the agenda to accomplish nothing and travel to no known destination, but in a way it is the ultimate way to live life. She does not have to be or get something done by a certain time because she has no goals. No Characters does not have to answer to anyone and follow what they say. She is not polluting or being materialistic. She does not own anything and does not need shelter, or clothes, or water, or food. Nunca just needs to keep living her life the way it happens without thinking about the result. She lets it unfold as she comes to it.

The world that she lives in is freeing, but also constricting at the same time. Her body has no actual shape because she is not an actual person. In a way she is blind and deaf, but sees and hears all at the same time. Her senses for that matter are very different from all other known species. Illness can not affect her. She does not love and so she cannot reproduce anyone else like her. Every part of her world is free but alone, for although there is one other in the general form of a man, she will never come in contact with him. She makes the rules but does not need to follow them. Her life is full of possibilities, but nothing as well. If she could attain normal human emotions, she could accomplish everything, but motivation does not push her to understand why she does what she does. Although she can do anything she wants, her life is restricted by her lack of existence.

Whatever she comes in contact with or rushes into becomes part of what has created her. It does not add or detract from her intelligence. She is not aware of it, but everything that has ever come into her life is what she is. All scents, emotions, textures, and colors are wrapped inside her being. Her life is full of beginnings and ends all at the same time. She never stops when she is hit by an object but keeps going and allows it to attach to her. She does not love or hate herself, but she does feel nothing. Even with everything that she is, none of it matters in the end and adds nothing to what defines her.

Most of all, she is a being of opposites. She is whole but alone; happy but sad; everywhere but nowhere; a being but not a person; can sense concepts but not understand them; create a path but go in any direction she chooses. She is nothing but everything because nothing can be anything it wants to be. She is a start and a finish. She is the air, water, and Earth. She is a mystery that is impossible to solve.
